They say young people are our future, and in this case the Young Rewired State Competition is giving our best and brightest young programmers the chance to showcase their own digital software.

The competition aims to find and encourage young children and teenagers who want to learn how to program computers, which some would deem a key skill in today’s digital age. Teams of participants will have a few days to come up with the best product they can, and then present it to the judges, their peers and members of the press, government and industry.

The last competition, held in 2011, was a huge success that created dozens of ideas for apps, including MyNHS, which allowed patients to easily and efficiently find their nearest hospital or book appointments online. What’s even more impressive is that everybody on the MyNHS team were just 14 or 15 at the time of development. Wow.

This year, Big Cat have been given the task of planning and managing the event, to be held 6th-12th August.  Having confirmed Birmingham’s revolutionary new arts and media quarter The Custard Factory as the venue, the Big Cat events team are eagerly awaiting to see what these young hopefuls can come up with.

What’s more, supermodel Lily Cole will be one of four judges for the final. Cole is behind the social giving network, and is looking forward to seeing what these young developers will create.

Here at Big Cat headquarters, we’re passionate about new ideas and creative development, and over the years we’ve seen some of the freshest youngest talent produce amazing software, that has really helped change and influence the digital world. Who knows, the world’s next number one app could be just waiting in the wings for its premiere at the Young Rewired State Competition.

We can’t wait to see what everyone’s come up with, and we’d like to wish all the participants the best of luck!
