From Music to Marketing – my first month as an intern.

Here at Big Cat we regularly take on interns for three month placements in all of our departments, to give people the chance to gain invaluable agency experience. Our marketing intern Sheridan Rudge, discusses moving away the Music industry and becoming part of the Big Cat pride…


As a Performance Industries graduate, I often get asked why I decided to get into marketing.  Well, it’s pretty simple.  When studying the music business, you don’t just learn how to pitch a harmony, the music is a given.   You learn how to turn an artist/band into a brand; you learn how to recognise your image, your target audience and how to communicate with them and create content.

I soon found out that I much preferred being behind the scenes rather than on stage in the spotlight.

So, how did I get to Big Cat?

Well… I was Googling marketing companies in Birmingham and Big Cat was one of the first I saw.  The reason for me clicking on their website was simple.  I’m a crazy cat lady.

After having a nose through their website, I saw that the Manager Director, Anthony Tattum had experience with the music industry.  Now it started to feel like fate.  Cats and music?!   I now knew that I needed to get their attention and ask for a chance.

I went around this in a pretty basic and old school way.  I simply wrote a letter by hand and posted it to Anthony.  Two days later I received an email offering me to interview for an internship!

My first interview was with the Marketing Director, Hannah Davies, and I felt at ease with her straight away; before I knew it we had been chatting away for an hour!  My second interview was then with Senior Marketing Account Executive, Keshia Chauhan.  Once again, I didn’t feel like this was interview.  It felt like I was meeting up with an old friend for coffee and catching up on how work and life was going.

Soon after, I was offered the internship position and I couldn’t have been happier.

I have been with Big Cat for almost a month now, and I feel as though I have already learnt so much. I can now manoeuvre my way around a CRM, compile email marketing and help create social content.   The best thing about Big Cat though is how they tailor the learning to you.  On my first day I was asked to think of 5 objectives. 5 things I wanted to focus on during my time here so they could ensure I received the best training they could provide such as; learning how the Marketing and PR team work together during a campaign, working on creating written content and learning to adapt to an office environment.

So even though it can feel overwhelming at times, I am proud to be able to say I am part of the Big Cat pride.
